Review: The Lost Hero

The Lost Hero
Heroes of Olympus #1
Rick Riordan

Jason has a problem.
He doesn't remember anything before waking up on a school bus holding hands with a girl. Apparently he has a girlfriend named Piper. His best friend is a kid named Leo, and they're all students in the Wilderness School, a boarding school for "bad kids", as Leo puts it. What he did to end up here, Jason has no idea—except that everything seems very wrong.

Piper has a secret.
Her father, a famous actor, has been missing for three days, and her vivid nightmares reveal that he's in terrible danger. Now her boyfriend doesn't recognize her, and when a freak storm and strange creatures attack during a school field trip, she, Jason, and Leo are whisked away to someplace called Camp Half-Blood. What is going on?

Leo has a way with tools.
His new cabin at Camp Half-Blood is filled with them. Seriously, the place beats Wilderness School hands down, with its weapons training, monsters, and fine-looking girls. What's troubling is the curse everyone keeps talking about, and that a camper's gone missing. Weirdest of all, his bunkmates insist they are all—including Leo—related to a god.
Rating: 5/5

Quotes:
“I have lightning and wind powers," Jason reminded him. "Piper can turn beautiful and charm people into giving her BMWs. You're no more a freak than we are. And, hey, maybe you can fly, too. Like jump off a building and yell 'Flame on!'"
Leo snorted. "If I did that, you would see a flaming kid falling to his death, and I would be yelling something a little stronger than 'Flame on!”

“Can we just call them storm spirits?” Leo asked. “Venti makes them sound like evil espresso drinks.”

“Piper gripped his hand and followed him, “If I fall, you’re catching me.” “Uh, sure.” Jason hoped he wasn’t blushing.
Leo stepped out next. “You’re catching me, too, Superman. But I ain’t holding your hand.”

My Thoughts:
I really loved the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. Even though it is a middle grade series, I feel like anyone could love it. Same with this series. I finished the PJATO series about a year ago and I have wanted to start The Heroes of Olympus series for a while. So when I saw this book on sale for six dollars (hardback), I had to get it and I am so glad I did.

The Lost Hero jumps right back into Percy's world. Except one thing, Percy isn't there. Instead we are introduced to three new characters: Jason, Piper, and Leo. I was a bit worried about getting a new set of characters, but I quickly learned to love them.  Jason has had his memory wiped. He wakes up one day on a bus with a bunch of other "delinquents" who don't even bat an eye at his appearance, but he has no idea who he is or where he came from. Then there is Piper, whose whole life seems to be changing.  It is always nice to have a strong female lead in a book and Piper is definitely that. And lastly there is Leo. He has a few immature tendencies, which isn't a bad thing, it actually provides for a lot of comic relief. Most of my favorite lines from this book were related to him. A bonus: He is able to find a way to fix or make anything. These three make their way over to Camp Half Blood, where they are told they will be a part of The Great Prophecy.(Dun, dun, duuuuuuun) Basically this book is all about their quest to save Hera, the queen of the gods, and to try to prevent the end of the world. Easy enough right? <---(sarcasm).

This book was awesome! It had all of the makings of a great story: action, adventure, humor, and a bit of romance. I loved venturing back into the world of half-bloods and I can't wait to start reading book two~

Have you read The Lost Hero? What did you think?

  1. I've read EVERYTHING by Rick Riordan. He's like the MASTER of mythology! (Kane, HOO, PJ)

In terms of The Lost Hero, I loved it! It was nice to dip back into the dangerous world of a demigod. (Plus Annabeth, let us not forget Annabeth)

You'll get to see allot of Percy In THE SON OF NEPTUNE.

  2. I loved the Percy Jackson series as well and I was sad when it ended! I haven't read The Lost Hero yet but wasn't eager to get used to a whole heap of new characters. Although I've heard later books have a heavier Annabeth/Percy focus. Great review Sydney!

  3. Yeah I loved the Lost Hero! Leo is now my favorite character; so sorry to Percy but I still love him too. My advice would be to not rush through all the books at once because you'll be left with tears, painfully waiting for Blood of Olympus. I'm still putting of House of Hades.. UGH..
